Abstract This study assesses the disclosure compliance with International Accounting Standard (IAS) 40 "Investment property" and analyses if there is an improvement in the level of disclosure when there is uncertainty at the markets such as under a crisis. Secondly, it examines in the context of accounting choice of the determinants that explain the differences in disclosure levels and investigates the determinants of disclosure compliance concerning the reliability of fair value estimates. The study documents an improvement in disclosure levels during the crisis period and evidences the influence of the country of origin and the accounting choice on the level of compliance with mandatory requirements regarding fair value estimations. This finding suggests that firms take more care about fair values presented in financial statements, relative to disclosed fair values. © Marta de Vicente Lama, Horacio Molina Sanchez, Jesus N.
