Abstract

Supercritical CO2 (sCO2) cycles have gained significant interest in the scientific community in recent years as a promising alternative for power generation systems, thanks to their high thermal efficiency, compact design, and adaptability to a wide range of heat sources and application fields. The operation of sCO2 systems as a power generation cycle under highly variable operating conditions and fluctuating boundary conditions is highly demanding on the stability and mechanical integrity of the components. With this in mind, the transient cycle operation has to be studied extensively, to ensure a safe, stable and efficient operation. This has been studied widely in the past, ranging from different fidelities of models, scopes of research and boundary conditions. In this context, the present paper provides a review of all relevant studies on dynamic sCO2 cycle simulations with details on simulation approaches and modeling strategies. To this aim, an extensive literature review on dynamic modeling approaches as well as component formulations is conducted. The foregoing studies are then grouped and analyzed according to their scope and modeling fidelity. From this, a critical analysis of the studies is made and possible gaps in the literature on system and component level are identified, providing a comprehensive overview and pathway for future research on this topic.
