In Suarez’s conception of political power, at least three dimensions can be glimpsed: democratic, moral and openness to the autonomy of political communities and legal pluralism. The aim of this article is to investigate the democratic dimension, starting with a contextualisation of Francisco Suárez’s political theory in order to avoid anachronisms when assessing its democraticness. Contradictions in the treatment of the origin of power and the seat of power, as well as the crucial question of limits (internal and external), will be addressed. The analysis of these elements will bring to light–on the one hand–the preponderance of the purpose of political power, i.e. the common good, and–on the other–the intimate link between the ethical and the political in a social framework marked by a strong religious-moral imprint and little political institutionalisation. © 2025 Universidad Loyola Andalucia.
