Abstract

Fraternity was part of the French revolutionary triad, but it has not had the same impact as the other two ethico-political ideals, namely equality and liberty. This article presents, on the one hand, the state of the question of fraternity as an ethico-political category, the causes of its neglect and its essential features. On the other hand, this research shows the value of Hermann Cohen's philosophy and its contribution to the current debate on fraternity. This is enriched by Cohen's reading of the Jewish tradition. The category of the neighbour is central to his work and helps to revise and expand the revolutionary ideal of fraternity.
