The studies that have dealt with the start-up, government and main features of the New Settlements of Sierra Morena and Andalusia (undoubtedly the main agrarian colonization project of the Spanish 18th century) are very abundant; a fact that does not keep relevant historiographic gaps from existing. In this sense, research focused on linguistic issues, whenever this colonization was carried out with Central European families who did not speak Spanish, have been very scarce and those concerning how the need to communicate with foreign settlers was managed by the administration in Spain are directly non-existent. Our objective here, therefore, will be to make a first approach to the organization of linguistic mediation efforts for those settlers established in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, with which we will be able to offer the reader an overview of the scope and limitations of an essential activity during the initial phase of the project.
