Sustainable nanomaterial synthesis in supercritical fluids for advanced analytical applications

Abstract

Although the importance of supercritical fluids has been described above, their significance for the extraction and manufacture of nanomaterials in analytical applications has not been thoroughly discussed. This review presents a critical overview of the role played by supercritical fluids in the preparation and extraction of nanomaterials for analytical purposes. This role has a clear influence on the development of new analytical tools involved in analytical processes and the determination of nanoparticles in a variety of samples. It provides a general view of the principal mechanisms and fundamental thermodynamic and kinetic aspects. The present review is structured on the supercritical fluid-based techniques and the synthesis of several types of nanostructures by using supercritical carbon dioxide, and their direct synthesis is also reported. Finally, several strategies to improve the actual methods, procedures and synthesis approaches for future research directions are suggested. The discussion also covers the advantages and limitations of using nanomaterials with supercritical carbon dioxide, as well as possible alternatives to address these limitations.
