José Juan Gil-Cosano is a Lecturer in Anatomy and Physiology and a paediatric sports and exercise medicine researcher at the Faculty of Health Sciences. He also collaborates with the Sport and Health University Research Institute (University of Granada), the Centre for Bone and Muscle Health (Brock University), and the Laboratoire des Adaptations Métaboliques à l’Exercice en conditions Physiologiques et Pathologiques (Université Clermont Auvergne). His research interests focus on physical and mental health during the paediatric age period, with particular emphasis on the relationships between physical activity, physical fitness, chronic systemic inflammation, and bone health in children and adolescents. In 2016, he received a Banco Santander scholarship to collaborate with the University of Granada. In 2017, he joined the ActiveBrains project, funded by the European Social Fund, a multidisciplinary initiative in which mental health was the primary outcome. This period contributed to the consolidation of his interest in paediatric exercise-based interventions integrating biological, lifestyle, and psychosocial factors. He completed a PhD in Biomedicine focusing on the bone–adiposity–inflammation axis in children with obesity and the modulatory role of exercise. His doctoral training included a research stay at Université Clermont Auvergne, where he gained expertise in advanced three-dimensional bone imaging and bone metabolism. During this period, he also collaborated with the EU-funded FITBACK network, contributing to the development of European reference values for youth physical fitness. Following his PhD, he participated in the multicentre iBoneFIT project, aimed at improving bone health in young cancer survivors. More recently, he has contributed to the development of the exercise component of a holistic intervention within an ERC-funded project aimed at preventing perinatal mental disorders. In 2024, he completed a postdoctoral research stay at Brock University, where his work focused on the acute effects of exercise and dietary factors on bone and inflammatory markers, as well as on contextual modulators of bone responses to exercise. These studies underpin an ongoing PhD dissertation at Brock University, in which he serves as a committee member.
