Abstract |
The purpose of this article is to provide an assessment of the direct implication of green hydrogen production on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on analysing its implication, contributions and examining the related challenges. Green hydrogen production directly promotes and reinforces multiple SDGs, including fostering innovation and sustainable infrastructure (SDG 9), driving climate action (SDG 13), and promoting sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11). Likewise, it supports clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), provides affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), and encourages responsible production and consumption practices (SDG 12). In this context, multi-stakeholder collaboration (SDG 17) is essential to ensure the sustainability of green hydrogen production, amplifying its positive impact on achieving the SDGs holistically. This is because the integration of green hydrogen reduces dependence on fossil fuels, facilitating a transition to affordable and clean energy solutions while mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Its versatility and the importance of improving its production offers opportunities in sectors such as transport, power, and industry, promoting economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure development. Nevertheless, challenges such as cost reduction, infrastructure development, and scalability need to be addressed. Always recognising that collaboration between researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers is essential to overcome the technical, financial, and regulatory barriers, accelerate global adoption, and drive the transition to a low-carbon economy. |
