Abstract This paper presents an unified approach to design suboptimal H-2/H-infinity controllers for different sorts of time delay systems (TDSs). The system stability is ensured by using a Lyapunov-Krasovski (LK) approach, and it is theoretically demonstrated that the method outperforms H-2/H-infinity designs in the literature. The improvement comes neither from new LK functionals nor from mathematical manipulations, but from the method to solve the H-2 problem. The result can be easily inherited by others authors by combining it with their LK functionals and bounding techniques. The paper ends with some numerical examples to compare the proposed technique and other well-referenced designs.
