In systems and control theory, estimation refers to the ability of inferring information of hidden variables of a system/plant by using the information contained in measurable outputs.
Sometimes, the outcome of an estimator is used to control a whole plant, since the whole state is not available. In other occasions, the estimates are needed for monitoring and supervising the process. Most well-known examples include the Kalman filter and the Luenberger observer.

Most of the literature concerning the distributed estimation of systems assume that the network of agents (sensors with some computational capacity) have a common objective, that is, the proper estimate of the current state. However, it is possible to find applications in which the collaboration between agents could be more profitable for some of the agents than for others. In these cases, negotiation schemes must be implemented, since local cost functions could be against the global ones. This thesis will investigate the application of game theory and the paradigm of competitive optimization to the problem of distributed estimation.

The student will acquire deep knowledge in several fields: distributed estimation, Kalman filters, Luenberger observers, game theory, optimization, etc. Moreover, the student will develop, among others, the next capacities: writing reports and scientific documents; making presentations (poster and oral) for conferences; working in collaborative environments; programming; doing research independently, etc.
In addition, the student will be offered the possibility of making research stays in other institutions, supervising students projects, teaching some courses in engineering degrees, and starting an academic career that could be continued in ULA or another institution.

Universidad Loyola Andalucía will specially value candidates whose curriculum vitae show:

  • Scientific research and production: seminars, congresses, books or publications in magazines.
  • Research stays in Universities of recognized international prestige.
  • Experience in models and methods of scientific research.

Universidad Loyola Andalucía, will receive the curriculum vitae with the following references:
PhdIngCO: PhD STUDENTSHIP Cooperation and negotiation in distributed estimation

Those researchers interested within the process should send their complete curriculum vitae, updated and with two recommendation letters to the following email address, specifying clearly the reference/s in which it wishes to be evaluated:

The curricula received either incomplete or not meeting the terms of the announcement will be automatically refused.

Universidad Loyola Andalucía is a committed institution with the pursuit of excellence, diversity and justice.
