Abstract

The << Consejeria de Educacion de la Junta de Andalucia >> is making an extraordinary effort in order to deploy, through 2008, 400 bilingual programmes of English, French and German, across its autonomous community. These programmes, which use languages as a mean of teaching and communicating, help students achieve mastery of linguistic and academic skills in both languages. This mastery is far superior to that of traditional programmes, and it has contributed to their well earned prestige. There are many factors that contribute to the success of a bilingual programme. However, having teachers with proper linguistic and methodological background is of special relevance, since this item has a strong impact on language and content learning. This article briefly describes the source, the theoretical foundations and the goal of Andalucia's bilingual programmes. It also describes actions taken by the << Consejeria de Educacion de la Junta de Andalucia >> in order to update and upgrade the linguistic and methodological skills of the teachers involved.
