Abstract

China's presence in the Middle East has undergone a remarkable evolution over the past twenty years. From relations centred on energy resources, the People's Republic has become an actor with increasing political weight. Its security imperatives and global ambitions explain this new profile. Given the consequences of the region's conflicts for its interests, China's actions have been aimed at promoting stability. The structural transformation in the Middle East provided it with an opportunity to achieve two further goals: to erode American influence and to consolidate its leadership of the nations of the Global South. The war in Gaza, the extension of the conflict to Lebanon, and the fall of the Syrian regime have exposed, however, the limits of China's capabilities.
