Abstract

Fear has been a tool used by political parties in order to persuade their voters, because of its capacity as a social controller. This study analyses the emotion of fear used on Twitter. For this purpose, we have selected the 2018 Andalusian election campaign, a preamble to the electoral cycle that Spain would experience in 2019, and specifically the case of Vox, which went from being a minority political party to obtaining twelve seats in the Andalusian Parliament, becoming key to the formation of the autonomous government. In fact, it has managed to position itself as the third political force in the state elections of 10 November 2019. In this study, the quantitative technique of content analysis (Krippendorff, 1997) and the qualitative technique of critical discourse analysis (Van Djik, 2006) were applied. Specifically, we analysed how fear operates in Vox's discourse, the propagandistic techniques most used, and how polarisation operates transversally in the discourse.
