Abstract

In this study I try to understand the controversial reference made by Francisco Suárez, SJ (1548-1617) to the concept of corpus mysticum, when he applies it not only to explain the social nature of the Church but, in turn, specifically and distinctly, to express the proper sense of the social and political union of the various social bodies and the source of the normative dimension that configures them. To this end, firstly, I will try to free access to the possible legitimacy of the use of this concept to explain the constitution of collective subjects such as political societies. Secondly, I will study the meaning of the "mystical" in his spiritual theology and its significance and implications for social bodies. And, thirdly, I will look at the fundamental elements that define the social and political fact and its moral and juridical meaning from Suárez's analysis. © 2023 Instituto Teologico de Caceres, Universidad de Extremadura.
