Abstract

The following article seeks to show the results of an investigation into the Augustinian interpretation of Is 10:23 LXX, a text quoted by Paul in Rom 9:28. The various contexts in which the Isaianic quotation appears within the Augustinian production allow us to discover some constants in the interpretation, as well as an evolution referring to the theme of grace in an anti-Pelagian context. The abbreviated word of which the prophet Isaiah speaks will be identified by Augustine as the double commandment of love, the fulfilment of which must be done freely by the human being helped by the grace of God.
