Abstract

Many specialized papers analyse the consequences of unsustainable touristic growth and system of mass tourism in urban tourism hotspot. At the same time more and more citizen across Europe start acting on their complaints about this phenomenon and protesting against what they consider unacceptable o unsatisfactory. Accordingly, this paper proposes a relative approach that defines the ways of social aversion or rejection towards tourism through descriptive and interpretive approaches. The aim of this paper is to address the citizen manifestations of a social phenomenon known as tourismphobia or overtourism, analysing the case of Barcelona (summer months of 2017). The paper defines the four stages of the crisis situation and it examines the events, tactics or strategies for claim-making that took place in the public space (material and virtual) through qualitative techniques of data analysis, and values the communicative actions led by the mains actors who participated in theses citizen protests.
