Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship among basic psychological needs' satisfaction, intrinsic motivation, self-esteem and intention to be physically active. A sample of 788 physical education students from Buenos Aires (Argentina), ages ranged from 12-19, completed four scales previously validated. The final structural equation model revealed that the basic psychological needs' satisfaction predicted the intrinsic motivation. Self-esteem was directly predicted by both the aforementioned intrinsic motivation and the competence's satisfaction. Furthermore, self-esteem positively predicted the intention to be physically active in the future. Results indicate that self-esteem would mediate the relationship between intrinsic motivation and intention to practice physical activity. Competence's satisfaction becomes particularly important as previous studies had shown. Findings suggest that interventions aiming to increase students' perceptions of competence within a physical education context could enhance their self-esteem as well as to facilitate their intentions to practice physical activity.
