Abstract

This article deals with the importance of legal design in improving public services and highlights the need to integrate usercentred design methodologies to make legal information more accessible and understandable. It stresses developments in design, from aesthetics to a strategic focus encompassing usability, accessibility and the user experience. It proposes the implementation of a "legal design ladder" consisting of five steps (information design, interface design, user experience design, service design and strategic design) to help the public administrations to assess and enhance their use of design at different levels, from information to strategy, to ensure that the general public benefits from a better understanding of and better access to the justice system.
