Abstract

We carry out a spatio-temporal analysis of the scattering from a spherical inhomogeneity irradiated by a finite transducer. We show that when the inhomogeneity behaves as a focusing acoustic lens, the gain and position of the focus depend strongly on the ratio of the lens size to the irradiation width. We also analyze the refraction through the lens which takes place for off-axis incidence using a two-dimensional approach. The results of the wave formulation reproduce those predicted by the law of refraction for the behavior of a ray and for the trajectory of a wave packet.
