Abstract Latin America\'s interest in Africa was renewed at the beginning of this century. Global transformations, Brazil\'s leadership and the emergence of regionalism prompted a partnership based on political dialogue and cooperation aimed at achieving greater impact on the international system. However, the interdependence deficit, the weakness of interregional institutionalization and the vulnerability of the actors involved have reduced the scope of this strategy without reaching its true potential. In a scenario of uncertainty that presages changes in the world order and consolidates fragmented governance, the possibility of reestablishing this relationship finds new incentives. The article analyzes the catalytic factors of this process and concludes that, despite the opportunites, its materialization still lacks the necessary conditions and capabilities to compete geopolitically for Africa. © UNISCI, 2022.
