With regard to Saint Au gustine’s Contra Faustum, one topic that has not been exhausted is the ecclesiological controversy between the two communities represent ed by the Bishop of Hippo and the Manichaean bishop, especially with regard to the link between ecclesiol ogy and Christology, which in both cases is presented with arguments of a soteriological nature. With this arti cle, we would like to contribute to a greater understanding of the Augus tinian Christology underlying the ec clesiological controversy centred on the dispute over the title uera sponsa Christi, which is signi!cantly present in book XV of the reply to Faustus. We will attempt to carry out a study of positive theology, sticking to the text and Augustinian exegesis in or der to unravel underlying doctrinal elements that have sometimes not been given their due value for a rich er and more accurate understanding of the work. First, we will offer an overview of Fausto’s Christ as pre sented in his “trinitarian” conception of God. Second, we will introduce the confrontation between Christologies, which takes place in the realm of ecclesiological controversy. Thirdly, we will analyse the most relevant notes of Augustine’s theology of the Chris tus Sponsus in his anti-Manichaean reply. Finally, we will attempt to draw some brief conclusions. © 2025, Faculty of Theology San Isidoro of Seville. All rights reserved.
