International Perspectives on Parenting Support and Parental Participation in Children and Family Services

During the last years, tremendous advances have been achieved in providing evidence for effectiveness in parenting support initiatives. However, empirical support on the explanatory mechanisms through which change occurs during parenting support interventions is still largely missing. The significant events approach emerged as a way of researching the psychotherapeutic process aimed at identifying important or useful moments during the intervention. This approach is intended to better understand the implementation process to identify successful components of the intervention, highlighting the participants’ own perspective on what is important during the intervention. In this chapter, the significant events approach is described as a useful strategy to identify mechanisms of change in parenting support initiatives, and it is framed as a tool to raise up the voice of parents as active agents in family support services. This approach is illustrated through the narratives of caregivers from vulnerable families participating in a parenting support initiative in Spain. Practical implications for parenting support delivery are provided, and future guidelines for a rights-centred and family-focused casework practice are introduced. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Carmel Devaney and Rosemary Crosse; individual chapters, the contributors.
