Abstract

Metaverses aim to change the worldview and perception of the Self from the digital context of virtual reality. The avatar will affect the way interrelationships are understood, overturning entrenched precepts of gender identity (IdG). These immersive discourses will be mature in approximately a decade, a horizon that coincides with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations. Among its objectives, Gender Equality stands out, a concept that in democracy is understood from a liquid dimension. The study aims to understand the implications of avatar-mediated interrelationships with respect to the IdG within advanced VR environments. The methodology is based on a documentary review and a questionnaire on how avatars in metaverses are interpreted as a reflection of IGD. A Likert scale was applied to confront the findings among 432 Spanish university students of the z generation. A metaverse decalogue is developed which gives rise to a brief state of the art. The participants are mostly tolerant of metaverses as spaces for the development of the IdG. It is concluded that metaverses will enrich the concept of the identity self and broaden the gender perspective among the new generations. © 2023 AusArt.
