Abstract

Precise monitoring of aromatic compounds (AC) represents a crucial step for the quality control of several matrices, which today represent a major social, economic and health concern. In this overview, the applicability of nanomaterials (NMs) for electrochemical (EC) detection of AC is presented. Several NMs such as metallic nanoparticles, metal oxide nanoparticles and carbon-based materials have been studied as electrode modifiers or as new electrode materials with an interest in their application in EC detection. So far, the sensors developed have shown an increase in sensitivity, among other improvements in analytical performance data. EC detection systems based on NMs developed are giving new entries to existing sensors or leading to the development of new tools for detection of AC with interest for applications in food and pharmaceutical fields, among others. This review is the first to focus on the development of NMs-based EC sensors for the detection of AC for analytical purposes.
