| Abstract | This article puts forward the following claims concerning Richard Rorty’s conception of narrative self-creation: The model of the ›strong poet‹ as a reference point for Rorty’s concept of individual authorship gets into conflict with his incorporation of hermeneutics as an important source of his philosophy. Rorty’s concept of self-authorship ignores the influence of material and economic conditions as revealed by critical theory. Thereby it leads to a misconception of ourselves that perpetuates inequality and suffering instead of overcoming them. Rorty needs to specify who he refers to as ›we liberals‹. Moreover it is not clear how solidarity is possible, given fundamental disagreements about which collective narratives should be adopted. © 2005 ontos verlag. |
