Abstract The differences between Francisco Suárez and Juan de Mariana were significant, beginning with their character, in particular, when dealing with such an important issue in political theory as the right of resistance and tyrannicide. Despite the existence of certain similar characteristics, that the enemies of the Society of Jesus emphasized, even a cursory examination reveals, indeed, a number of differences. However, it is worth examining these differences by reference to a practical issue that could shed light to about the depth of those divergences. I refer to the fact that Suárez never cites Mariana when treating the issue of tyrannicide. This is strange, not only because evidence shows that they knew each other, but also because it is very difficult to maintain that the first author did not know the work of the second one. There is obviously a matter of political strategy in that silence, but it is also clear that Suárez should understand that his theory did not coincide with Mariana\'s. © 2017 Cuadernos Salmantinos de Filosofia.
