Abstract This paper presents a Unified Power Quality Controller (UPQC) in an application with a Custom Power Active Transformer (CPAT); a power electronics integrated transformer which provides services to the grid through its shunt and series windings. Utilization of the active transformer has been previously proposed but its integration with energy storage has not been investigated yet. In this regard, shunt and series converters alongside an active transformer and a battery are converted into a more robust system that is able to perform in islanding operation and mitigate the variability of a Photovoltaic system. Simulations of the active transformer demonstrates its functionality of providing the required grid services. © 2020 IEEE.
