Abstract The main goal of the MULTIMICRO project is to study and define the intelligent management and control architecture of distributed power systems based on interconnected microgrids to be deployed in communities without electricity access. The MULTIMICRO project proposes interconnecting microgrids for developing electrical clusters in remote communities to take advantage of different opportunities such as local renewable sources. Therefore, the analysis of the low-level control of microgrids to guarantee stable operation when they are interconnected to each other will be one of the objectives of the project. Another objective of the MULTIMICRO project will be to define how such stabilization and control algorithms should be integrated in the microgrid control system. The microgrids considered in the MULTIMICRO project will grow naturally by interconnecting to other neighbor microgrids, which will result in microgrid-based electrical clusters. Such clustering process should result in a more robust and reliable electrical system by sharing resources and reserves among interconnected microgrids and will be able to connect to a neighbor distribution network, thereby consolidating the electrification of the initially isolated community.
