Abstract The shift of the centre of gravity of the world economy towards Asia; the geopolitical transition towards a multipolar system whose main variable is the rivalry between the United States and China for dominance of maritime Asia; and the challenge posed to the European universalist identity by the rise of a continent whose cultural values and conception of politics are based on other perspectives, place Europe before an unprecedented scenario that will largely condition its future. The rise of Asia reduces Europe\'s relative weight, but it also demands the reorientation of its economic and geopolitical strategy to prevent being marginalized in the ongoing reconfiguration of the international order.
