Abstract Recent scholarship has examined the potential of using social media in higher education through the lens of different disciplines, classroom environments, tools, and assessing a diverse range of educational outcomes. While much of the scholarly work in this area focuses upon the advantages and successes of using social media tools, this chapter seeks to uncover the potential challenges and downsides. To this end, we ask: what are the challenges to using social media tools in a higher education classroom setting as perceived by students? We ?rst outline research examining social media in higher education through a comprehensive literature review and provide summary tables as reference guides. Next, we detail our exploratory research examining students’ perceptions of using social media in the classroom. Lastly, we illustrate our ?ndings and pose implications for educators. © 2018 Taylor & Francis.
