Abstract In recent years, tourism has grown in religious destinations across the globe, including a variety of religious traditions, and has become a key driver for the economic development. However, research within this field is limited. This paper focuses on identifying determining factors for the growth of this type of tourism. The research design is of non-experimental and descriptive nature. Different tools for collecting information were used, such as tourist surveys and semi-structured interviews with key informant, in order to analyze and compare religious destinations in different countries and associated with different religions, though highlighting Catholic destinations, with special reference to Mexico and Spain. The main factors determining tourism to religious destinations are: the expansion of certain religion traditions, the diversification of the tourist motivations, the development of the media and their interest in religious places and events, and the dynamic and coordinated role of religious and secular authorities. The main conclusion from this research is the need to design effective strategic plans for promoting tourism to religious destinations, resulting in the economic development of the regions.
