Abstract Human dignity is usually associated with public law. However, its role in private law is increasingly being recognized. In this context, attention is drawn to the connections between human dignity and private international law. Examining how this unfolds in the Colombian legal system leads to two main ideas. First, the relationship between human dignity and the notion of recognition in private international law is twofold, since beyond its significance in the recognition of foreign laws and judgments, it also provides a voice to marginalized groups. Second, the role of human dignity in private international law challenges the traditional divide between public and private international law. Underlying both ideas is the fact that the meaning and function of human dignity are shaped by the specific context in which they operate.
