Abstract The doctrine of hell, being inalienable for the Catholic faith, is truly uncomfortable, not only for pastoral care, but also for theology. Its apparent incompatibility with the image of a merciful God causes it to be silenced or presented with modesty, almost as an anomaly. After a exposition of the basic elements of the doctrine, as well as the main theological alternatives (Apokatástasis and ganz Tod), we will present our proposal taking into account the concept of person presented by I. D. Zizioulas. We will try to show that the possibility of hell is not incompatible with God’s mercy, but rather a limit manifestation of it. © 2025 Instituto Teologico de Murcia. All rights reserved.
