Abstract

This paper explores the perverse way that pseudomystics attempt to theologically justify their sexual activity. It begins with a historical overview of Gnostic sexual practices and discusses the discursive ambiguity between the exoteric and the esoteric. The work of Javier Garrido, OFM (canonically condemned as a “pseudomystic”) serves as a case study, with analysis of textual ambiguities in light of the investigations into abuses committed by the Dominican Philippe brothers and Jean Vanier. The article identifies three areas of overlap between Garrido’s work and non-Christian ideas that divinize sexual impulses. The conclusion calls for discernment and prudence in the use of marital imagery in mystical language as well as for clear sexual morals. © (2024), (Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile).
