Abstract In 1767, after considering for decades the prospect of promoting colonisation with foreign families in mainland Spain, the government of Carlos iii initiated the New Settlements of Sierra Morena and Andalusia with 6,000 Central European individuals. This was an intriguing but costly venture, which subsequently influenced the governmental stance towards similar proposals in the following decades. Our aim here is to analyse a proposal made from within the Intendancy of New Settlements in 1817. This analysis will enable us to understand the context in which it was formulated and the reasons behind its rejection.
