Abstract The presence of Islam poses new social, political and legal challenges that must be properly dealt with in religiously plural Spain of the 21st century. This article identifies the different groups of Muslims in present-day Spain by focusing on the associative and federative frameworks. This article analyzes the processes followed in the Islamic Commission of Spain regarding the creation of new communities and federations, the legal representation of Muslims and the statutory modification of the CIE, from a legal point of view. These processes continue to provoke various crises in the Spanish Islamic community, which have not been able to be resolved at present. This study concludes by explaining the State and autonomous legislation related to Islam, and the normative development and modifications of the articles of Law 26/1992.
