Abstract The New Settlements of Sierra Morena and Andalusia enjoyed, from 1767, a regional regime that guaranteed them a series of privileges and exemptions. The Cortes de Cadiz, however, considered its permanence incompatible with the Constitution, so it was abolished in 1813 and, again, in 1820. The objective of this work will be to analyze the resistance that its neighbors showed to liberalism, the strategies of the former absolutist rulers to continue occupying positions of power in them and, above all, the determined collaboration that they provided for the capture of Rafael del Riego in 1823.
