Abstract Given the hegemonic models of development that have made any alternative proposal peripheral and invisible, more and more authors and communities are re-vindicating their thinking from the viewpoint of difference, which enables the development of critical and liberating theories. The thesis set forth in this article is that, to accomplish this, a previous stage is needed: construction of the conditions that will make possible the emergence of a critical consciousness, which in turn makes possible the search for cracks in the established hegemonic system. Applying this to the field of development, the study summarizes the main contributions that have emerged from models founded on the anti-hegemonic concept of harmonious coexistence.
