Abstract This study analyzes the motivations of so-called transformative volunteerism within the context of nongovernmental development organizations (NGDO), which attempt to raise awareness among Westerners of poverty-related problems in developing countries. Based on two of the most relevant studies on the motivations of volunteers, a questionnaire was validated using a sample of 376 individuals who voulunteer for Spanish NGDOs and perform development education work. The results of this study have validated the motivations inventory provided in previous studies and have created new categories inherent to the motivational reality of transformative volunteerism.
