The research line in Materials and Sustainability focuses on developing applied scientific solutions for the following fields: thermal energy storage, thermochemistry, electrochemistry, hydrogen production, CO2 sequestration, and the development of sustainable and innovative building materials. One of the main activities in this line of research focuses on the design and testing of advanced materials and catalysts for i) CO2 capture and its conversion into products of high added value by chemical and electrochemical methods; ii) development of innovative routes for the catalytic conversion of biomass to fuels and chemicals and renewable hydrogen production; iii) virtual design of materials for sustainable applications. The capture of CO2 and its subsequent valorization has become one of the most significant challenges of our time. In addition, the production of chemicals and fuels from renewable sources, such as biomass, is attracting considerable attention today. The group is developing new and efficient catalytic routes to replace fossil fuel-based technologies. On the other hand, the combination of advanced numerical methods and robust multiphysics models is bringing about a paradigm shift in material design. The latest advances in computational tools allow for the developing of more efficient, reliable, and sustainable materials.
