Director de Departamento de Ingeniería e Investigador Titular en la Universidad Loyola Andalucía. Ingeniero Técnico Industrial -químico- (2009), Ingeniero Industrial -energía- (2015) y Doctor en Ingeniería Energética, Química y Ambiental por la Universidad de Sevilla (2018). En su currículum destaca el perfil multidisciplinario, combinando experiencia en investigación y docencia, así como experiencia como ingeniero de procesos y como emprendedor, siendo fundador de dos empresas de ingeniería -INSENE, GENEREN. Como investigador, el Dr. Ortiz finalizó su tesis doctoral sobre el proceso de Calcium-Looping aplicado tanto para la captura de CO2 post-combustión como para el sistema de almacenamiento de energía termoquímica en plantas CSP. Trabajó en el extranjero durante 4 meses en el Politecnico di Milano (Italia) durante su tesis doctoral. El Dr. Ortiz es coautor de más de 50 artículos JCR. Además, ha participado en más de 15 conferencias y ha solicitado 2 patentes internacionales. El Dr. Ortiz ha participado en 5 proyectos de investigación internacionales (CLIMACT, SOCRATCES, REMEDIO, WECAREMED, ECF4CLIM) y 4 proyectos de investigación españoles (CALSOLAR, SOLARTEQH, PROCEX, SunStorCa(OH)2). Actualmente es investigador principal de los siguientes proyectos: proyecto CO2-FREE (financiado por la Junta de Andalucía), ATRIC 4.0 (Misiones CDTI 2021, subcontratado por ACCIONA), MOTHERESE (Proyectos de Transición Ecológica y Transición Digital 2022, financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación) e HIPERTES (Proyectos de Generación de Conocimiento 2022, financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación). El Dr. Ortiz es un investigador reconocido en almacenamiento de energía termoquímica. Se encuentra entre los 10 autores con más publicaciones sobre "Thermochemical Energy Storage" (SCOPUS, Oct 2023), así como incluido en la lista del 2% superior de científicos de la Universidad de Stanford. Desde 2015, el número total de citas a su trabajo es de 2229 en Google Scholar, con un índice H de 25. En general, las líneas de investigación seguidas en los diferentes trabajos que ha publicado hasta la fecha son Análisis Energético de Plantas CSP, Fuentes de Energía Renovable, Almacenamiento y Transporte de Energía, Modelado de Sistemas de Almacenamiento de Energía, Diseño, Análisis y Optimización de Producción de Energía y Sistemas de Cogeneración y sus Componentes, Producción, Transmisión y Conversión de Energía- Modelado de Sistemas Energéticos, Análisis Termodinámico, Captura y Almacenamiento de CO2 y sistemas de Almacenamiento de Energía Termoquímica basados en Calcium-Looping. Por último, cabe destacar su contribución a la divulgación de la ciencia, siendo habitual participante de la "Noche Europea de los Investigadores" y la "Feria de la Ciencia" de Sevilla.
