Dr. Manuel Antonio Díaz-Pérez starts his career in the private industry (Huntsman Tioxide, 2006), working in the process engineer field. His main task in the company was to optimize the electrochemical process for the production of titanium dioxide through the design of lab experiments, the scale up to pilot plant and the implementation of the new processes/ideas into the industrial process.   His stage as researcher begins in the National Institute for Aerospace Technology (INTA) in 2009, working in the field of fuel cells performance and hydrogen production. The main topic of his research was the analysis of the impact caused by some impurities (carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3 )…) in the performance of PEM fuel cells. The design of galvanostatic experiments (polarization curves) and electrochemical impedance tests (EIS), focused on analyzing the behavior of the electrocatalyst and the recovery ratio after a contamination process, stand out among all his responsibilities. During the period at INTA, he finished his PhD in 2015 studying in detail the electroreduction of CO2  over platinum and how the CO produced in-situ by this reaction can deactivate the active sites of the catalyst.   He keeps working as researcher at Abengoa Research (2013-2017) focused on heterogeneous catalysis field. During this period, he was working in two different branches: the production of hydrogen through reforming of ethanol and methanol, and the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass (European project Valorplus). The tasks performed in the area included: in-house synthesis of catalysts with high selectivity and activity, characterization of the materials (e.g. H2 -TPR, NH3 -TPD, BET, XRD, TEM, TG analyses), experiments design and tests performance under different operation conditions.   In 2017 starts his stage at Abengoa Innovacion, where his profile as a researcher is improved working as process engineer. He actively participated in the main project of the company, designing and starting up an industrial scale reformer of ethanol for the production of hydrogen. In his first stage, he was involved in the testing, characterization and optimization of the catalyst that would be used in the final reformer. After this period, he was in charge of the scale-up of the technology for the correct integration with the rest of equipment. As a result, it is important to highlight that the industrial reformer demonstrated its complete operability and stability.   In 2018, his work continues as a researcher and as a professor at Loyola University in the Material and Sustainability (M&S) group. Research lines of the group lies on the design of new materials for the capture of CO2  and the synthesis of catalysts for carbon dioxide valorization through chemical and electrochemical routes; development of catalysts for biomass upgrading into valuable chemical products and biofuels; design of novel materials for thermochemical energy storage; and virtual design of materials for sustainable applications. Currently, he is involved in the development of new catalysts for the production of hydrogen through the electrochemical oxidation of bioethanol. Furthermore, he is also studying the optimization of the electroreduction of carbon dioxide for producing valuable products (syngas, methanol, etc).
