Professional Demand

As English becomes an increasingly global language, journalists and others working in, or with the media need to be comfortable speaking and writing the language. This course covers a range of media-related fields including newspapers, television, radio and marketing. As well as teaching specialist language, the course also develops job-specific skills such as writing headlines, producing advertisements, scheduling programmes and preparing a pitch, focusing on the role played by language in communication whether in face-to-face conversation, or through paper-based or electronic texts

Course objectives

At the end of this course, you will:

  • Be able to present own views and to interpret information, texts and situations in group discussions
  • Be able to understand texts in the field of journalism and other media-related topics,
  • Be able to find new information related to the media
  • Be able to use terminology in the field of journalism and the media in English


  • Pairwork – students will work in pairs to develop oral linguistic competences in the fields of journalism, media and communication
  • Groupwork – some activities will be carried out in groups, where students will discuss ideas in small groups and then feed back to the class

Continuous assessment
During the course, students will do several progress tests. Besides, all the activities and tasks carried out in class or at home as part of this course will be assessed and taken into account for a final mark. These aspects will be taken into account for the final result:

  • Progress tests (20%)
  • Coursework (60%)
  • Homework (20%)

Attendance will be a fundamental aspect of the continuous assessment and so a minimum of 70% of attendance will be compulsory.
